Endodontic Retreatment

Occasionally, a tooth that has received previous endodontic treatment may not heal properly, or may become painful or diseased months or years after treatment. Luckily, Marc P. Gimbel, D.M.D., L.L.C. and Montville Endodontics offer endodontic retreatments to give your natural tooth a second chance.

Why Do I Need Another Treatment?

As with any other medical procedure, circumstances may arise in which an additional dental treatment is necessary to preserve the natural tooth. A tooth that has undergone a root canal may not have healed appropriately for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Narrow or curved canals were left untreated
  • Undetected canal complications
  • Crown placement delayed during previous treatment
  • Salivary contamination prevention unsuccessful
  • Loose, cracked or broken crown exposes tooth to new infection
  • Tooth fracture
  • New decay

Endodontic Retreatment Procedure

Once your doctor has determined that endodontic retreatment is appropriate, we will schedule you for an appointment for your root canals to be reopened, filled and sealed again. In order to access the canals, the crown and other materials must first be removed. Once visibility of the inside of the canals is established, the tooth is thoroughly examined for signs of additional canals or irregular anatomy to ensure a thorough cleaning during retreatment. If a thorough cleaning is prohibited due to narrow, curved or hardened canals, endodontic surgery may be necessary.
